Build 5e Hero is a free character generator for fifth-edition tabletop roleplaying games.

It began at the table. I have introduced many groups to the game, and the hardest part for people who are new to the system is always the same: building a character. Before anyone rolls a die, a new player is asked to choose a class, a background, and a species, assign ability scores, and work through skills, equipment, and spells, often without knowing yet what any of it means at the table. It is easy for that first evening to become a long reading session instead of a game.

This site is meant to shorten that step. A new player can answer a few plain questions about how they would like to play and receive a complete, rules-accurate character in about a minute, with an explanation of why it fits. Experienced players and game masters can use the fully random option to produce a quick pregenerated character or to try a class they have not played before.

The generator follows the 2024 rules as published in the System Reference Document 5.2.1, and creates characters at levels 1, 2, and 3. Characters are built in your browser, and no account is required. The guides explain each step for anyone who would like to understand the choices the generator makes.
